56 and counting…

That’s me now. Fifty six and looking forwards – when I get the chance that is. I have to say I’m rather excited. A few years back, a colleague explained how my pension works and I realised – with delight I might add – that this was one financial area in which I had not (yet) fucked up. Yes!!!!

Not only would I have a half decent salary, but there would be a lump sum too!

Okay, yes, this should not have been news. I definitely should have paid attention

before, but how bloody marvellous!

So – (annoyingly find myself starting sentences with this little bugger, the curse of the noughties) what was the next phase going to look like?

Well, the job goes on, as does the mortgage; the former until at least 60, the latter till 63. Hmm.

I’ve realised though, that once I’m eligible for my pension, I’m basically taking a salary cut! Because I’d get more than a third of the money for walking the dogs, browsing the charity shops, cleaning the hob and watching the telly!

Of course it’s more complicated than that – but I’m not sure I can focus on it for long enough to know how.

One thing is clear though. I know too many stories of people who have retired and popped their clogs. And if I don’t do something about the cheese and chocolate factor, that’s going to be me. I mean why not? My arteries are not immune from clogging, my heart is not super powered, my joints are not worthy of scientific study.

So – (see, there it is again) I’m going to (road to hell I know) make a lasting change.

Beginning on Monday (no!) at Slimming World (yawn but I believe!).

I’m excited about what’s coming next. On the cusp of a second career, but a flexible one, I want to enjoy a long and healthy later life if it’s not too late.

I’ve never felt better than when I’ve followed Slimming World principles in the past, and despite the fact that I hate people telling me what to do, I don’t seem to mind if I’m asking them to tell me.

So – (argh) I’m putting myself in the hands of Helen, my local SW consultant, who will guide me to a haven of marvelousness and transform me into a healthy being who will laugh in the face of camembert, hob nobs and fudge.

I’ll check back in when I’ve got the shiny new starter pack!
